Description
The Cervélo R5 has long been one of the premier climbing bikes on the market. Each year, it gets lighter and faster, and this time around is no exception. The R5 was notably seen helping Jonas Vingegaard ride his way to a Tour de France title in the General Classification. The newest iteration of the R5 is lighter and more aerodynamic than ever. It balances all of its features to remain comfortable through a grueling climb while getting you to the top as fast as possible. Of course, a climbing bike needs to be able to take on the inevitable descent. The R5 is ready to fly around hairpin turns with impeccable handling, making it a truly elite bike in all areas of road riding.
With how lightweight the R5 has always been, it is surprising that Cervélo can even make weight improvements anymore. They managed to make the new R5 frame 130 grams lighter than the previous model. This comes out to a staggering 16 percent weight reduction. Even the graphics and paint are lighter than before, giving you the lightest road bike you could possibly imagine. With a frame that light, you have the freedom to build it up any way you want without compromising its climbing ability. The Cervélo R5 is the kind of bike you want to have when it is time to charge up the mountains.
In addition to its weight reduction, the Cervélo R5 is flat out faster than ever. Obviously aerodynamics are not as much of a focus as they would be on the S5 or P5, but more speed never hurts. They used internal cable routing which reduced drag by 25 grams. The R5 has a stiff frame but it is not too stiff. While power transfer is important, you need to feel fresh, stable, and comfortable on difficult climbs. The Cervélo R5 is the kind of bike that is made to get you to the top but it is still fun and effective in every area of your ride.
A tour-level bike needs a tour-level build and Cervélo held nothing back when creating their R5 models. This version is equipped with a SRAM Force eTap AXS groupset, providing high-level 12-speed electronic shifting at a lower price. It also has a Reserve 34 wheel at the front and a Reserve 37 at the rear. The rear wheel is narrower and taller than the front, helping you climb with the most efficiency possible. This was tested in the wind tunnel for optimal performance. The Cervélo R5 is one of the lightest bikes you will ever encounter and makes challenging road rides a ton of fun.
